une premiere impression particulièrement honnête sur head-fi à propos de l upgrade
Thanks to the kind generosity of Sean (from SLT) and Aleksander, I had a chance to listen to the silver interface, star 12 cable and star 8 interface cable in my home set up. I was advised to listen to the gear in the following order:
Connect one end of the star 8 interface cable to the amp (SAEQ Armageddon) and the other end to my original interface.
Use the original star 8 headphone cables.
Listen to at least 2-3 songs I am familiar with it.
In the above first scenario, I was not sure what to expect and nothing seemed to change in terms of sound.
I then moved to the second scenario:
Connect one end of the star 8 interface cable to the same amp (SAEQ Armageddon) and the other end to my original interface.
Use the star 12 headphone cables.
Listen to at least 2-3 songs I am familiar with it.
In the above second scenario, I was able to hear some changes to the sound in terms of details, clarity and soundstage. And I admit these changes were subtle, at first listen but they were there nevertheless, to my ears.
I then moved to the third and final scenario:
Connect one end of the star 8 interface cable to the same amp (SAEQ Armageddon) and the other end to the silver interface.
Use the star 12 headphone cables.
Listen to at least 2-3 songs I am familiar with it.
In the above final scenario, I was able to hear more obvious changes to the sound in terms of details, instrument separation, clarity and soundstage. I would not say that the bass has been enhanced or anything like that. To my ears, the bass did feel more pronounced and controlled. To my ears, I did not hear any treble enhancement or harshness or sibilance that will result in listening fatigue.
With the above combination, I was listening to various test tracks for about 90mins, well until midnight when I just had to go to bed because I needed to work the next morning. As much as I liked what I heard, I still did not feel compelled to buy the new package, at the asking price.
The next day I had to return the package to Sean and when I went back later in the evening to listen to the Immanis with the original interface cable, original interface and star 8 cables, that was when it hit me. I listened to those same songs again. There was just something that was instantaneously missing. I do not know whether it is a placebo effect or whether my mind is just playing tricks on me.
During can jam this past weekend, I did more listening, and I ended up buying the damn thing on Sunday
All of what I said above is my personal opinion only. I do agree that there are some of us Immanis owners who are happy with the sound as-is and do not want to mess with what’s already working. And I also agree that for some folks, the price of the upgrade may not commensurate with the perceived uptick in sound.
Having said all of this, if you have a chance to have a home demo of the new upgrade package, please give it a shot.
